Mid Week blog#108 - Pop out Gatefold card

Hello & welcome to my blog,

My name is Alison & I am an independent Stampin' Up® demonstrator in Melbourne, Australia. I love creating cards & gifts for my loved ones & this blog will show you how to create something special for those you love. I blog twice a week, once on a Sunday where I mainly showcase a stamp set or dies & sometimes special DSP. My second blog is mid week on a Wednesday where I look at techniques, colour challenges, card sketches, fun folds, tools & equipment & ways to make or improve your projects. That's what this blog is about.

I do love a good fun fold & today's was a lot of fun to create. It is called a Pop Out Gatefold & I designed this card to give to a work friend for her upcoming wedding. I used some retired stock as well as current & love how it turned out. I hope you like it too.

Here's a collection of photos of the finished card, front & back.

Now I'll walk you through the steps I took to create it.

Step 1. Cut the card base to 28cm x 10.5cm. Score at 7cm, 14cm & 21cm.

Step 2. Turn 90°. Position the cutting blade at the top (7cm) score line at 3cm & cut down to the 3rd (21cm) score line. Move the base across to 11.5cm & repeat the cutting between the score lines.

Step 4. Return the base to horizontal orientation. Score between the cut lines at 10.5cm & 17.5cm.

Step 5. Fold the outside wings of the card in toward the centre of the card to create a valley fold. Burnish well.

Step 6 & 7. Gently fold the top & bottom centre score lines (14cm) up to create mountain folds.  Burnish. DO NOT FOLD THE SCORE LINE IN THE CENTRE OF THE CARD.
Carefully fold the score lines at 10.5cm & 17.5cm up to create mountain folds. Burnish. Your card should now look like the pictures below.

Next, you need to cut DSP & contrasting cardstock.
1. Side panels - 2 x 6.6cm x14.1cm or 4 if you are decorating the reverse of the card also.
2. Top & bottom mountain fold areas - 4 x 6.6cm x 2.6cm or 8 if you are decorating the reverse of the card also.
3. Centre panels - Contrasting cardstock - 1 x 7cm x 8.1cm or 2 pieces if you are decorating the reverse of the card also.
4. Centre panels - Basic White - 1 x 6.6cm x 7.7cm or 2 pieces if you are decorating the reverse of the card also.
Here are the pieces I cut. I chose to decorate both sides of the card as I wanted a sentiment on both sides plus putting cardstock on both sides of the centre panel provides a lot more stability when the card is open.

I chose From My Heart DSP from a few years ago. I bought it when it was retiring as I wanted a strong but pretty paper in my supplies for just this type of occasion. I used both sides of the same sheet of DSP & teamed it with Blushing Bride cardstock.

Adhere the strips with alternating patterns in the appropriate spaces.

The final step is choosing your decoration & sentiments. I used Forever Blossoms stamp set for both. I heat embossed the floral spray in gold then water coloured the centres & leaves with Real Red & Garden Green. I trimmed the spray into 2 pieces so that it would fit nicely in the centre, blending some Garden Green on the Basic White also. The sentiment was heat embossed with black. I gently used a bone folder on the edges of the leaves & blooms to give them a little 3D effect then raised them on a few well place glue dots. The front was finished off with some gold Festive Pearls.

I decorated the reverse of the card with the same DSP but reversed the order of the panels. I added a different sentiment that will be included in my message. I'm so happy with how the card turned out. It's a great fold to showcase DSP & one I will definitely use again.

That's it for this week's blog. I hope you enjoyed this funfold. If you decide to give it a try I would love to see your creations so please feel free to pop over to my facebook page at craftebyalison & share your pics. My next blog is on Sunday & I will share an embossing folder with you then my next mid week blog will show you how to use one colour in Monochromatic creations. I hope you can join me for both of them.
Til next time, take care & keep creating! XX Alison
