Midweek Blog#157 - The Split Negative technique

Hello & welcome to my blog,

My name is Alison & I am an independent Stampin' Up® demonstrator in Melbourne, Australia. I love creating cards & gifts for my loved ones & this blog will show you how to create something special for those you love. I blog twice a week, once on a Sunday where I mainly showcase a stamp set or dies & sometimes special DSP. My second blog is mid week on a Wednesday where I look at techniques, colour challenges, card sketches, fun folds, tools & equipment & ways to make or improve your projects. That's what this blog is about.

Today I have a fun technique to share with you called Split Negative. It's a heat embossing technique where you emboss the same image twice using 2 different cardstock & ink or embossing powder colours & cut both images in half then swap them over to create 2 images that are half & half. I previously made a black & white card many years ago but decided to try different colours this time.

Let me show you what I mean...

So, in order to achieve this unique look I first cut 2 pieces of cardstock slightly larger than the size of my card base. I chose Basic White & Wild Wheat as the stamp set I was using is called Thoughtful Wishes & has an image that reminds me of wheat or corn stalks.
I used a Stamparatus®, Stampin' Up®'s stamping platform, so that I could stamp the images centrally on both pieces of cardstock.
On the Wild Wheat cardstock I stamped the image with Versamark & used White embossing powder.
On the Basic White cardstock I stamped the image with Wild Wheat & used Clear embossing powder.
Once the images were dry I lined them up together on my trimmer & cut them in half vertically.

I then lined up one half from each of the colours so that the images were exact & placed some washi tape on the front to hold them. I used double sided tape on the reverse of the images to keep them lined up
before trimming a tiny bit from the ends that didn't quite match.
These were then backed with some co-ordinating Everyday Happiness DSP & added to one Basic White card base & one Wild Wheat base.
Now that I had the basis of my cards completed, I diecut the same shape in Vellum using the matching dies, sponging some liquid glue onto some of the image to secure it to the front.
I chose Wild Wheat for the sentiment as it went well on the Basic White section of both cards & also stamped some splotches in Wild Wheat for visual effect.
The final step was to add some Earth Tones Shimmer gems.
Here is a closeup of one of the finished cards...

Now that I had my main cards completed I decided to play around with brighter colours...

For these cards I chose some Bloom Impressions DSP from Sale-a-bration. The bright colours went beautifully with Blackberry Bliss & Shaded Spruce card bases.
For the Shaded Spruce card I wrapped some Sheer ribbon around the DSP for a little accent.
The stamped image is from Classic Wedding & was stamped with Versamark & heat embossed in Black & White. This time I used a larger piece of cardstock & cut the two images in half before using Perennial Postage dies & the retired Deckled Circles dies. I used the same method, washi tape on the front & double sided tape on the reverse, to hold them in place before cutting.
I decided that this time I would use the same method for the sentiment. I like it.
Then the final step was adding embellishments, Blackberry Bliss ribbon & 2024-26 In Colour Shimmer gems. Here is a closeup of the split sentiment...

So, that's it for this technique, I hope you've enjoyed learning about it & might even give it a try yourself?

My next post is on Sunday & I will be sharing some cards made with the Everyday You & Me stamps & dies.
My next mid week blog will feature a CASE'd card from one of the catalogues.
I hope you can join me for both of them.
Til next time, take care & keep creating! XX Alison
