Mid Week blog #104 - Faux Silk technique

Hello & welcome to my blog,

My name is Alison & I am an independent Stampin' Up® demonstrator in Melbourne, Australia. I love creating cards & gifts for my loved ones & this blog will show you how to create something special for those you love. I blog twice a week, once on a Sunday where I mainly showcase a stamp set or dies & sometimes special DSP. My second blog is mid week on a Wednesday where I look at techniques, colour challenges, card sketches, fun folds, tools & equipment & ways to make or improve your projects. That's what this blog is about.

Today I am sharing a technique that is quite easy to create but changes an everyday creation into something a little more special. It changes regular stamped cardstock from a flat, matte finish to an appearance of silk material. Here's how it's done...

Select your DSP. I chose some from the Sale-A-Brations Sunny Days pack because the red & white flowers were just so pretty & looked the perfect one to use. A bold pattern works well as the DSP is covered with glue & tissue paper so light prints or patters may not show up as well. I decided to team it up with some Basic White & Real Red cardstock, 3D Basics embossing folder & Painted Poppies stamps & co-ordinating Painted Labels dies.

After cutting the DSP to the desired size I brushed a light layer of liquid glue across the entire piece. Before the glue dries you need to quickly scrunch up a slightly larger piece of tissue paper then unfold it. You need to have creases in the tissue paper for this technique to work. This is then layered over the DSP & gently smoothed so that the paper adheres thoroughly to it without loosing the small creases.

The tissue paper is then trimmed to the size of the DSP. Allow the DSP to dry completely before using in a project or you may get a warped finish. I place it under some heavy punches to hold it flat.

To create the card I embossed the Basic White matte with the star patterned folder & adhered it to the Real Red card base. I used Foam Adhesive strips to mount the Faux Silk piece to the card. I stamped some poppies in Real Red then heat embossed with clear embossing powder to give them a shiny lustre. The leaves are from Painted Poppies also & stamped in Tuxedo Black then coloured in with Garden Green blends but not embossed & the foliage is punched in Lemon Lime Twist using the Boughs punch. These were adhered to a piece of Basic White to give it some firmness then adhered to the card with Foam Strips & the faux silk with glue dots.

Of course, I had to decorate the inside of the card & an envelope to match!

So that's this simple technique finished. I love the finish, it's a little different from other things I've tried. I hope you like it too & will give it a try. If you do, I would love you to post a pic on my Facebook page at craftedbyalison.

Well, that's it for tonight's blog. I hope you enjoyed it. My next blog is on Sunday & features one of my favourite things - Coffee! I'm creating using the Latte Love stamps, dies & DSP which is an Online Exclusive.
In next week's mid week blog I will be showing you a fun fold that has a twist to it.
Thanks so much for visiting my blog, I hope you've enjoyed it & can come back to see what I have for you on Sunday & next Wednesday.
Til next time, take care & keep creating!
XX Alison
