Midweek Blog#152 - Using Blends & Markers to create your own embellishments.

Hello & welcome to my blog,

My name is Alison & I am an independent Stampin' Up® demonstrator in Melbourne, Australia. I love creating cards & gifts for my loved ones & this blog will show you how to create something special for those you love. I blog twice a week, once on a Sunday where I mainly showcase a stamp set or dies & sometimes special DSP. My second blog is mid week on a Wednesday where I look at techniques, colour challenges, card sketches, fun folds, tools & equipment & ways to make or improve your projects. That's what this blog is about.

Today I share with you how to create your own co-ordinated embellishments using Stampin' Blends & Stampin' Write markers.

Stampin' Up have lots of lovely embellishments to choose from but sometimes you need a ribbon or gem to finish off a project and what's on offer isn't quite what you want.

That's where the Blends & Markers come in. Using neutral embellishments I was able to personalise ribbons & gems for some upcoming projects.

I went through my stash & got out a variety of retired & current products to experiment with...

All of them are white or clear.
For the white ribbons I chose to colour with a Night of Navy Stampin' Write marker.
I started with an oldie - Glittered Organdy ribbon from way back in 2021 as it is similar to the Night of Navy & Gold glittered ribbon from the current Annual catalogue. But white.

Colouring the ribbon is really simple. With the brush end of the marker you swipe it along the ribbon making sure you use the side of the brush and NOT the tip. I used a piece of scrap paper underneath to protect my work surface a little. Here is how it turned out...

I then decided to use the Stampin' Blend in the same colour to see if there was any difference.

In the picture above you can see that the left side of the ribbon is slightly lighter than the right side. This is because the Stampin' Write markers are water based & the Stampin' Blends are alcohol based which gives a slighter darker finish.
Next was the Crinkled Seam Binding ribbon. I used the markers again & as this ribbon is thicker than the Organdy one the colour sank in more & was darker...

The final ribbon I tried was White Diagonal Trim ribbon from the Petal Pink & White Diagonal Trim pack in the Annual catalogue...

I like the finish on this ribbon but as this is the thickest of all three of the ribbons, the colour did not soak right through & the underside is lighter. If you wanted the same colour on both sides then you could add more on the top side or flip it over & colour the under side.

The next thing I wanted to show you was how to colour plain embellishments to perfectly co-ordinate with your projects.
This time I raided my stash of retired bling & selected Pearl Basic Jewels, Faux Sea Glass Shapes & Classic Matt dots.

The pearls are coloured with Pebbled Path blends by gently swirling the brush end all over each dot until I was satisfied with the depth of colour. As it's an alcohol base it dries pretty quickly so they can be used almost instantly. I have left them on the sheet as I will be using them for a project this weekend.

Next, the Faux Sea Glass shapes were coloured with Dark Petunia Pop & Dark Parakeet Party blends as well as the Melon Mambo marker. The material for these embellishments is more opaque than the Glossy dots but still took the colour well. These are also for a project this weekend.

The final example I have is the pearls, coloured with Dark Daffodil Delight blends. These are not for any planned projects but I thought the colour would be useful for the centres of flowers.

So that's it for this mid week post. I hope you enjoyed learning this little tip. It is great to have the ability to create customised embellishments so easily. I hope this inspires you to have a go at creating some of your own.
That's it for this week. My next post is on Sunday. I will be sharing a kit from the Stampin' Up® collection as I have a very busy weekend lined up. I have cards day with my crafting friends, coffee with my daughter & Bowls presentation with my husband on Saturday then Sunday is an Online Stamping Retreat (my 8th one so far!) at the crack of dawn plus brekky with my girlfriends before returning for more of the retreat so I needed something quick & easy to share with you!
Next week's Mid Week blog features a card I created from a Mystery Stamping session with Rachel Tessman from Stamp Your Art Out. It's a fun creation with a twist to it.
I hope you can join me for both of them.
Til next time, thanks for dropping in, take care & keep creating!
XX Alison
