3D project - Christmas ornament made with DSP

Hello & welcome.

My name is Alison & I live in beautiful Melbourne, Australia.

For those of you who have previously visited my blog & are now returning, thank you. For those of you who are here for the first time, welcome!

Here's a little bit about me. I love creating cards & gifts for my loved ones & this blog will show you how to create something special for those you love. I blog twice a week, once on a Sunday where I mainly showcase a stamp set or dies, embossing folders, projects & sometimes special DSP and Wednesday evenings when I highlight a technique, fun folds or tools & tips. I would love to hear from you if you have any questions or suggestions & my email address for that is craftedbyalison@gmail.com.

Today I have a 3D project for you to help you get organised (a little) for Christmas. It is, after all, only 9 1/2 weeks away!! I saw this project on a post by Stamp with Nellie and it is quite easy. You can see her tutorial post, with a video included, here

The project uses squares of double sided DSP, folded & glued together with twine & a bead to make a star to hang on your Christmas tree or anywhere you would normally hang your ornaments! I hope you enjoy it.

To create your very own star you will need:

  • Your choice of DSP - five pieces that measure 2″ x 2″ & two pieces that measure 1″ x 1″
  • twine - approx. 14" for each star which can be trimmed after threading the bead
  • a bead with a hole large enough to thread some twine through
I played around with different papers to see how they would work & I now know that DSP that has lots of foil needs special handling as the glue slips on the foiling. You also need to ensure that the papers your choose are double sided & have a non directional pattern.

Now I will walk you through the steps I took to create my stars. Just a heads up that I took a LOT of photos to try to show you each step. I don't create videos so having more photos than usual was needed.
To begin with, I cut all of the DSP squares & gathered my supplies. The DSP is Traditions of Christmas specialty paper.

There are 3 folds for each square. The first two are scored in the centre of the square. After the first horizontal scoreline you turn the square 90 degrees & score another horizontal. The final score line is on the diagonal. The three steps are shown below from bottom to top.

Next, I folded & burnished all of the horizontal score lines then pushed in on the diagonal score line to make the square pop, just like an origami fold.

After all 5 squares are folded I lined them up with the open tip facing upwards so that when I glued them together they would all face the same direction.

With the open section facing upward I applied liquid glue to one side of the first piece...

The second piece was adhered to that...

So I now have this...

I continued to adhere each piece until I had this...

Which looks like this when held together...

Now to attach the twine.

With the open part of the fold facing down this time, I applied glue then laid the twine diagonally with the end coming down from the point then adhered a smaller, 1" piece over the top.

Once both sides have twine your star will look like this...

The twine is then threaded through the hole of the bead & a knot tied at the very top of the twine. Do not tie a knot near the DSP or you won't be able to open your star!
Pull the bead down to the top of the DSP squares for the folded result.

The finished, folded star is quite small & compact for storing, measuring just over 1" square with the bead.

To open the star up, pull the bead up to the knot then fan open the squares until the two unglued ends meet. Pull the bead back down to touch the DSP. It is now ready to hang!

As these stars are quick & easy to make I decided to make a few extra samples - different DSP's but the same dimensions & a second size, measuring 3" for the main squares with the smaller ones 1 1/2" each. The smaller one uses Kintsugi Inpsirations & the larger one is Marbled Elegance.

Here is the larger star on it's own...

And the 3 completed ones open...

and closed up...

Finally, here are the finished stars hanging on a wrack to show what they would look like on a tree...

I love how they have turned out & will be using up some of my Christmas stash to make for my daughter (she loves to put an ornament on her gifts when wrapping them) as well as for our tree & for gifts.

So that's it for this post. I hope you enjoyed my creations. Now for some news & information from Stampin' Up®.

EXCITING NEWS!

I recently started a Web design course as I want to create a website for my business & am not very tech savvy & needed professional help.

The course runs until the end of the year & by then I will have a brand new website where I can have my blog, a shop front to sell my products & eventually links to a newsletter.

I hope to have this up and running by the new year with any bugs ironed out & all my products transferred to the new site. Currently I blog via this site - Blogspot - my products are available on my Facebook page & I don't have a newsletter yet. Moving to the new platform will enable me to have all of these goals realised & everything in the one place.

This is a work in progress but I will keep you informed as I progress. It's very exciting but also a little scary.

Fingers crossed 🤞 it all comes together smoothly & I'm a quick learner! 😁

If you shop with me then there are some new changes to the rewards program that you should know about. In the past we were able to create a host code & group together individual orders & pass on the 'hostess' benefits to customers with qualifying orders. This has now been replaced with a 'Rewards' program that gives all customers who place an order with a qualifying amount a credit of 10% of their order to use on future orders. This will be displayed during the checkout process or your order. Stampin' Up® feel that this is a fairer way of rewarding all customers.

There are a lot of new ways to craft on offer at the moment which I will go through one at a time.

Ready?

1Stampin' Up® have decided to introduce an advent calendar called  the12 days of Christmas, just for crafters! YAY!
The calendars work the same as traditional chocolate calendars in that they have windows that you open each day in the lead up to Christmas (if you can wait that long!) & inside are surprises for you that are all craft related. We don't know what's in each window, Stampin' Up® haven't given us any clues except that there are exclusive dies, papers, embellishments just to name a few.

If you would like to order one then go to my online store here

2. Stampin' Up® have just released 2 new joining offers for anyone who is interested in joining & saving a lot of money.

These offers are available until the 31st October so if you're interested in joining then I suggest you check out the catalogues & online exclusives to see what you'd like in your starter kit.

3. Virtual Craft Classes will now be available to purchase from my online store starting with the very first class, scheduled for October 24th - that's less than 2 weeks away!

The class will feature the beautiful Traditions of Christmas Suite collection. Don't worry if you can't attend online at that time as you will have access to the recorded class after the event too! There will be an exclusive Facebook group just for Card Classes which you will receive a link to join when you purchase the class. This event is on the 24th October so get in quick if you're interested!
If you would like further information please contact me.
Lastly, there have been lots of great items added to the clearance rack which is now called Last Chance items so make sure you check them out using this link to my online store.

If you would like to purchase any of my creations that I feature in my blogs they can be found in my FaceBook shop at craftedbyalison or you can order something unique.

I hope you've enjoyed today's post.

That's all I have for you this week, my next blog is on Wednesday & I have some tips for you to help with fussy cutting - something that not everyone loves!

In my next Sunday blog I will share a creation made with Mystery Stamping clues. I love crafting this way as there are so many different options & it's often a surprise when you're finished.

I hope you can join me for both of them.
Well, that's it for another week. I hope you enjoyed this post & come back for more.

Til next time, take care & keep creating! XX Alison.

Here are some links to the products that I used today & some craft room essentials.
