CASEing a 3D container from the annual catalogue
Hello & welcome to my blog,
My name is Alison & I live in beautiful Melbourne, Australia. For those of you who have previously visited my blog & are now returning, thank you. For those of you who are here for the first time, welcome!
Here's a little bit about me. I love creating cards & gifts for my loved ones & this blog will show you how to create something special for those you love. I blog twice a week, once on a Sunday where I mainly showcase a stamp set or dies, embossing folders, projects & sometimes special DSP and Wednesday evenings when I highlight a technique, fun folds or tools & tips. I would love to hear from you if you have any questions or suggestions & my email address for that is craftedbyalison@gmail.com.
Stampin' Up® launched their new Annual Catalogue in May & it's a beauty! It's set out quite differently to previous catalogues but there are benefits to that. They now have sectioned it to have beginners, which is a step by step collection of materials in kits, then there is quick & easy where you select base materials & packs of pre-printed or diecut materials plus some stamp sets then there is create your way where you choose all the materials, stamps etc yourself & create your way! In the quick & easy section Stampin' Up® have also provided some inspiration with a colour wheel & information of various ways to use colour combinations. There is a section explaining 4 different ways to vary your colours - Monochromatic, Complementary, Analogous & Triadic. It's a wonderful tool to help with creativity & I shared my first post using it in my midweek blog of 29/5/24 & also in my midweek blog of 24/7/24 but it's not what this week's post is about, that is something I will explore more in future blogs.
Today I am sharing my version of a sour cream container from the Annual catalogue. Stampin' Up® have a lovely range of projects on display in the catalogue & there is a resource for demonstrators that shares the products used to create them. I have based today's project on a some small gift containers on page 29 of the catalogue. The container is called a sour cream container as I presume that sour cream was once sold in this shape. Whatever the reason for the name, the shape is an easy, handy way of creating a container for gifting small items. Here's how I made mine.
I chose a very pretty DSP pattern from the Frames & Flowers Specialty DSP & ephemera pack...
Applied Tear'n'tape along the left side & bottom...
Removed the tape from the side, rolled it up & adhered the two sides together...
##Tip - I found that gently rolling the DSP with a bone folder helps to break up the fibres in the paper and allows you to roll it more easily. You now have a tube. |
The next step was to remove the tape from the bottom & pinch it closed.
The tip for this step is to make sure that the seam is placed just to the right of the fold. This means that when you see the top of the container the seam will be more centred. ##If you find that the tape is not holding as well as you'd like, apply a TINY amount of liquid glue to any areas of concern & hold until it's dry.
I then cut out two circles - one in Lost Lagoon using the Everyday Details dies, the other is Petal Pink from the Subtles 6"x6" DSP & punched with a 2" punch. These were scored in the centre, centred together then had a small hole punched through them for ribbon.
I glued one of the halves together then glued that to the back of the container.
Next was the embellishments...
I chose pretty flowers & foliage from the ephemera, arranged in a bouquet & attached it to a Lost Lagoon 2" circle. The sentiment is from Crafting With You, stamped in Pretty Peacock & the heart is from the same stamp set, stamped in Pumpkin Pie. I used the retired 1 1/8" punch for that. Then there's a tiny swirl of retired Bakers twine behind that has a subtle orange twirl through it that complements the spray. You will only need to glue part of the circle to the container or it will warp when you open it up.
The last step was to thread some Petal Pink Scalloped ribbon through the hole & tie a bow. The container is now ready for a few little treats!
Now that I had my container finished I thought it would be perfect for a friend at work's birthday coming up in a few weeks. So, I decided to make a card to go with it. Out came the ephemera again along with the sheet of card fronts included in the pack.
There's such a lot of lovely pieces to choose from. I chose a piece from the top right of the sheet that was similar to the pattern on the container.
The card base is Calypso Coral & I ran the front of it through the embossing machine with the crosshatch pattern from the Basics 3D embossing folder. The DSP card front was next, followed by a posy created with a selection of the flowers & foliage & a Petal Pink bow. This was added to a 2" Lost Lagoon circle then raised on dimensionals.
I really loved the ombre look of the foliage in the background so decided to play around with some inks for the sentiment. I chose Happy Birthday from Go To Greetings & inked up half in Granny Apple Green & the other half in Garden Green by carefully placing only half of the stamp on Granny Apple then turning it around & inking up the other half in Garden Green. This gave a beautiful ombre finish, perfect for what I wanted. This was mitred with the Banner Pick-a-punch & also raised on dimensionals.
Love, love, love the bright colours mixed with the soft pastels. Here are the container & card together.
